Addressing the Healthcare Worker Shortage: Haiti Air Ambulance’s Initiatives

September 30, 2023

The backbone of any effective healthcare system is its dedicated workforce. In Haiti, this truth holds even more significance. Unfortunately, the nation grapples with a shortage of healthcare professionals and essential medical resources, leaving countless underprivileged families without access to the vital care they so urgently require. At Haiti Air Ambulance, our unwavering commitment is to bridge these critical gaps in healthcare delivery. Whether through comprehensive training initiatives, the provision of essential medical supplies, or our vital air ambulance service, we are tirelessly working to ensure that the people of Haiti receive the support they deserve. Here are some ways our team addresses the pressing issue of the healthcare worker shortage in Haiti.

Training Programs

Training existing and new healthcare workers is crucial. At Haiti Air Ambulance, we offer extensive training programs, including over 600 First Aid courses delivered to medical personnel and their communities in Haiti. These programs are designed to empower individuals with the knowledge and skills necessary to provide immediate assistance in emergency situations. Haiti Air Ambulance is an International Training site for the American Heart Association, and we are also the first and only NAEMT training center in Haiti.

Another cornerstone of our training initiatives is the Basic Life Support (BLS) program. This course is designed to equip local Haitians with essential life-saving skills, especially valuable in a country where emergencies can occur without warning. Participants learn a variety of crucial techniques, such as CPR for different age groups, early use of Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs), and effective ventilation methods. The program also emphasizes the importance of teamwork in multi-rescuer resuscitation scenarios and offers techniques for relieving airway obstructions in both adults and infants. By providing this training, we’re building a network of community responders who can fill the gap between an emergency situation and the arrival of professional medical help.

Medical Supplies

In addition to helping to support the healthcare worker shortage, we also aim to provide healthcare workers with the medical supplies they need to take care of the people of Haiti. With over 60,000 COVID-19 vaccines and critical medical supplies delivered, we are committed to providing healthcare workers in Haiti with the medical supplies they need.

Making a Difference Every Day

Haiti Air Ambulance is a non-profit organization dedicated to serving the 11.4 million people of Haiti. In a country where reaching medical care can be a grueling journey lasting up to 12 hours, HAA has revolutionized access to healthcare not just through training healthcare workers, but also through our air ambulance services. Our helicopter services have reduced this travel time to a mere 24 minutes, a change that has been nothing short of lifesaving.
